72 hour emergency contraceptive pills (ECP)
Emergency contraceptive pill consists of Levonorgestrel (1 tablet of 1.5 mg or 2 tablets of 0.75 mg).
Levonorgestrel is a progestin-only hormone used to prevent unintended pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or known or suspected contraceptive failure. To obtain optimal efficacy ,it should be taken as soon as possible within 120 hours of intercourse.
When does one use ECP?
ECP tablet should be taken as soon as possible with a glass of water(do not chew tablet)within 120 hours(5 days) of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
What are the possible side-effects of ECP?
Common side-effects: Nausea(feeling of vomiting),vomiting,headache,dizziness
Other side effects: breast tenderness,lower abdominal pain.
There is chances of unexpected vaginal bleeding but it is not dangerous and should be settled by the time of next period.
What are the possible drug interactions of ECP?
Such drugs are:- barbiturates, carbamazepine,felbamate, phenytoin,rifampin,st.john’s wart,topiramate decrease the effectiveness of progestin -only hormone.
Take EC pill orally with in 12 hrs to 120 hrs of unprotected intercourse. If vomiting occurs with in 2 hrs of taking the pill, you should take another dose immediately. To prevent vomiting,it is preferable to take the pill with food.
