MEFENAMIC ACID AND ITS USE IN DYSMENORRHOEA
➢ Mefenamic acid is the first choice of drug for the treatment of dysmenorrhoea and menorrhagia in context of Nepal.
➢ Mefenamic acid is used for the short term treatment of mild to moderate pain from various conditions. Like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dental pain .
➢ Also used to decrease pain and blood loss from menstrual period.
How it works?
➢ Mefenamic acid is NSAID (Non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) that inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins in body tissues by inhibiting at least 2 cyclooxygenase isoenzymes, COX1 and COX2.Thus contribute to its anti inflammatory activity.
How much to take?
➢ If you are an adult initially start with 500mg Tablet or capsule once then 250mg per oral q6hr PRN. You should not exceed your dose more than three days.
➢ Treatment for children below 14 years of age is not recommended. But children above 14 years old can start with 500mg tablet once then 250mg per oral every 6 hours PRN . You should exceed the dose more than 3 days.
➢ During pregnancy this medication should be used only needed.
➢ It is not recommended for use during your first and last trimesters of pregnancy due to possible harm to the unborn baby and interference with normal labor delivery.
How to take?
➢ You should take with food or glass of water to avoid GI effects. For dysmenorrhoea, you should start with onset of bleeding and pain.
Its adverse effects:
➢ Abdominal pain
➢ Upset stomach
➢ dizziness, drowsiness
➢ Renal failure
